Professional Summary

Dr. Johnson is a board certified general and forensic psychiatrist licensed in Maryland and the District of Columbia. Dr. Johnson is a graduate of Howard University, Howard University College of Medicine, The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences residency program where he served as the Administrative Chief Resident during his final year, and the St. Elizabeths Hospital forensic psychiatry fellowship program. Dr. Johnson also holds the honor of being a Jeanne Spurlock American Psychiatric Association Congressional Fellow where he worked in the U.S. House of Representatives with a senior congressman on several key policy issues.

Dr. Johnson is a court appointed mental health monitor and his forensic psychiatry portfolio includes psychiatric assessment and forensic evaluation of persons in correctional institutions, secure hospitals, the community, and other settings.

Dr. Johnson is also an Attending Psychiatrist at The George Washington University Hospital and serves as clinical faculty for Saint Elizabeths Hospital. In these roles, Dr. Johnson has the pleasure of providing clinical instruction to forensic psychiatry fellows, psychiatry residents, and medical, physician assistant and psychiatric nurse practitioner students.  Dr. Johnson has also served as a site supervisor for The George Washington University Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and the Drexel University College of Nursing and Health Professions.

As the former Director of Psychiatry at Unity Health Care, Inc., the largest non-profit community health care organization in the District of Columbia, Dr. Johnson was responsible for supervising adult and child and adolescent psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, medical assistants, and law enforcement, in addition to administering the delivery of psychiatric services to over twenty-five community sites and the District of Columbia Jail.  Dr. Johnson was also a psychiatric consultant for Bread for the City in Washington, DC, where he helped to facilitate their mental health integration process and educated primary care providers on the initial management of psychiatric illness.

Through his private general and forensic psychiatry practice, Dr. Johnson:

  • Conducts psychiatric assessments and provides general adult psychiatry services to patients with a focus on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders, prescribes medications and psychotherapy as needed.
  • Refers patients to therapeutic and support services when appropriate.
  • Provides forensic psychiatry consulting services.
  • Offers clients a sophisticated understanding of the nexus between psychiatry and the law.
  • Evaluates and assesses human behavior and mental health within a legal context.
  • Assists the court, legal professionals, and others with cases involving parties who may have mental disabilities and disorders.
